Design Studio... One of the good things about my tutor Derek is his ability to see what you can't see or identify but is there. Through his probes and proddings he brings out of you what you really wanted to say about the work. It's frustrating with him nagging 'yes, but what are you saying, what does it say'... until suddenly the answer comes very softly and very quietly to you, like a small ephiphany.
He'd spread out my photos of Macquarie Place and told me to forget I took them and to pretend that I was curating them instead. I kept focusing on the light and shadow, and he kept saying yes but what do they tell you about what the photographer feels... it was awhile before it quietly slipped from my mouth... "Love"... and he smiled with satisfaction that he had finally pulled out of me what he could see all along... My love for this city, it doesn't matter that this is just a small tiny triangle of Sydney, but my love for this city and my photographers eye are able to see that in every little corner... and I do, I really do love Sydney. I love other places a lot too, I think I could generalise this to a love of my surroundings. I find love in the landscape, both natural and built, in the details and twists of images and light and compositions of it.
I don't find love so easy to give someone else, but I give it fullheartedly to my surroundings, to the world itself, rather than its inhabitants...
